We have been at a crossroads in the United States for longer than you can imagine. However, that crossroads has finally shifted gears in order to become a full blown highway to meltdown. We are of course talking about the shady business that is campaign financing, special interests, and corporate donors. Dark money in politics has been the gaping scar in Washington D.C. since the Supreme Court rendered their Citizens United ruling in order to allow it to happen. While it is easy to blame Citizens United as a group we must focus our thoughts onto the key figure behind it all, James Bopp.
James Bopp appeared before the FEC in 2008 in order to argue that his propaganda film, “Hillary: The Movie”, be allowed to air on television during the democratic primaries that featured Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. His goal, obviously, was to put out a smear campaign against Clinton. The Federal Election Commission quickly batted down this idea because it was essentially a 90 minute slander piece that was bereft of any sort of signifier, such as: “Produced with the Approval of the GOP”. Bopp was laughed out of court only to come back in 2010 only this time before the Supreme Court. The rest is tragic history.
There is one group fighting to undo the damage that James Bopp has rendered onto America and they are End Citizens United. End Citizens United is a political action committee that has been uniquely focused on the 2010 Supreme Court ruling that involved James Bopp and his conservative group, Citizens United. End Citizens United is being run by President Tiffany Muller and it has been her core focus to completely undo the work that Bopp put in so that Americans can once more have faith in their electoral system.
In order for End Citizens United to have any great changing effect the team is going to have to raise money in order to make a difference at the federal level. This means that they are going to have to focus on grassroots campaigning in order to raise funds to back politicians whoa re vocally in support of repealing the Citizens United decision. The election of Donald Trump, as tragic as it was, may have served as a catalyst in order to inspire great change in America.
Throughout 2017 the team at End Citizens United has been shocked and overjoyed by how much money they have been able to raise via donations and pledges. Through just the first quarter of the year the team had raised nearly $4 million of their $35 million goal. Along the way End Citizens United has endorsed several major politicians including Senator Elizabeth Warren.
