The End of an Era of Discrimination

Immigrants from Libya drown as they try to get into Europe and others get shot at along the border of Mexico and the United States of America. Many immigrants get sexually abused while others end up being used as slaves. Everywhere around the world, the voices of the minorities are calling for justice. Learn more about Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey:

The world has continuously overlooked the fact that immigrants are also human beings who have rights and dignity which should be respected.

To help immigrants have a voice and to have the world recognize them, advocacy groups came up long ago and some are coming up even now. The main role of most of these advocacy groups is to champion for civil, human and migrant rights. The majority have succeeded in their efforts through:

 conducting training that involves the authorities that are in touch with the immigrants

 fighting for the rights of the immigrants through proposing favorable policies and championing for their recognition

 supporting immigrants financially

 helping those illegally detained with free legal and attorney services.

One group that has helped the efforts to give hope to immigrants in the state of Arizona and along the Mexican border is the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund. Founded by veteran journalists Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund has been hailed as an organization that is committed to making sure that the welfare of the minority is catered for and that everyone is respected for who they are.

The fund solely funds groups and organizations that advocate for the rights of immigrants as well as those that stand against the abuse of the minorities.

As senior journalists, Michael and Jim started the Village Voice Media in the 1970s that became vocal in condemning the abuse of human rights.

They publish articles that exposed individuals who were behind the suffering of immigrants. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkinspoke against racial discrimination and those who abused immigrants for their own benefit. Michael and Jim got arrested later after they wrote a story involving Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the self-proclaimed toughest American sheriff.

The story exposed the sheriff as corrupt and one who used his powers to abuse others among them racially grouping and discriminating the minority groups. Upon their release, the two journalists decided to take the bull by the horns by suing the county for the unlawful arrest and detention. The court awarded them 3.75 million dollars as a settlement. Michael and Jim decided to use the money to start the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund.

Other advocacy groups that are effortlessly fighting for the rights of the minority groups include the Amazon Watch. This organization works in the Amazon Basin. The organization was formed with the aim of ensuring that in the distribution of natural resources, indigenous people benefit and not only a few in the society.

Following a continuous growth of large scale discovery and exploration of such natural resources as oil and gas, indigenous communities are often overlooked, neglected and left in abject poverty as their resources are taken away by few rich individuals. Amazon Watch works with environmental groups in making sure that this does not happen.
