Doe Deere, Internet Entrepreneur

Some makeup is made to convey a natural look. Natural, but heightened a bit, to make the skin look smoother and the eyes a little brighter, the mouth a little glossier or a bit more pale. Then there is makeup that makes a bold statement. This is makeup that says “I”m here, I”m exciting and yes I’m beautiful.” This is the statement that’s made by Lime Crime cosmetics, an edgy upstart brand that’s the brainchild of entrepreneur Doe Deere.

Back in 2007/2008, Russian emigre and fashionista Doe Deere decided to build on an idea she’d first started a few years earlier, when she’d launched an online fashion line via eBay. Back when Deere was sewing her own fashions, she found that finding the right kind of boldly colored material was a challenge, so she had to get doubly creative to make the kind of clothing she was envisioning. When it came time to launch her makeup brand, she took that same kind of innovative spirit to create the bold makeup line she knew would speak to creatively beautiful women. That’s why Lime Crime is madeup of cosmetics that Deere mixed herself with the help of a dedicated chemist.

Deere says that one of the accomplishments she’s most proud of with her Lime Crime cosmetics is the creation of the first “liquid to matte” lipsticks, called Velvetines. These truly unique lipsticks come in a a tube and go on as a liquid, but they dry to an eye-catching, thick and glossy matte feel. These lipsticks were created after months spent in a lab with a chemist who was as dedicated as Deere to creating a great new product. These lipsticks are certified as cruelty-free, and they come in a range of eye-popping colors (from electric blue to purple, hot pink, green, orange and even yellow) that are simply stunning. Deere is proud of the quality of these lipsticks and the fact that they don’t crumble, but really do wear well.

To go along with the eye-catching look of these gorgeous lipsticks, Lime Crime also offers pots of Zodiac Glitter, with can be applied for longer wear with a special glitter adhesive. These iridescent glitters look utterly smashing on the lips, eyes, and even lightly dusted on the cheeks. They really do add an extra bit of luster on pretty faces that enjoy a magic sparkle.

The whimsical feel of Deere’s makeups is captured in the fanciful unicorns she uses as a symbol of the brand. The idea even extends to her other colorful lipstick line, Unicorn Lipsticks. These are gorgeously colored matte lipsticks that make a pretty pout into something quite out of this world, beauty wise.

Deere’s philosphy regarding makeup and beauty seems to be, why be ordinary? Why indeed.

Slyce: Take a Photo and Shop

The progression technology is notable in the world today. The growth of smartphones is remarkable especially today. The smartphones equipped with cameras, on which most of the people today take photos of the items they desire, and maybe plan to buy. Slyce application took advantage of the market gap and provides consumers with the opportunity to search their desired products online and compare the prices set for the products.

Slyce is a Toronto-based product that provides a podium that allows the users to take merely a picture of their favorite product, search and purchase the items. Slyce exists as an independent consumer mobile application as well as a white label solution that integrates into existing retailer technology. Slyce identified a market opportunity that presented itself through the growth of M-commerce, as mobile shopping registered a whopping 39% of all online traffic. The application uses an advanced product recognition technology, which overcomes the limitation that faced the prior applications such as Amazon Flow.

Similar to Slyce, Amazon Flow also allowed its users to take a photo of their desired products and purchase them from the Amazon’s mobile platform. However, Amazon Flow faced some limitations since it required the products to be in its original package to be effective because it relied on OCR, logo identification, and visual shorthand cues. The introduction of Slyce in the market was a game changer since it can identify the products while outside of the package regardless the location of the product. The ability of Slyce to locate the products despite the condition of the package gives the application a cutting edge over its competitors resulting in its exponential increase in the market.

The Slyce management has employed various strategies to increase the application’s popularity. The Slyce marketing strategy is primarily based on creating partnerships and relationships with the forefront consumer brands. Additionally, Slyce aim at providing their technology as a flexible white-labeled m-commerce solution. Furthermore, Slyce is purchasing applications such as Pounce and SnipSnap hence expanding their user-base.

Additionally, the Slyce technology enables retailers to be there at the moment of their customer is need of their product. Therefore, with Slyce Shopping is as simple as taking a photograph.

Yeonmi Park Stands For Human Rights Recognition in North Korea

Many times people feel inadequate and helpless when it comes to invoking change. This feeling of helplessness happens due to different reasons. Many times, people see a situation and feel that they are too small to institute any sort of opposition. Others may excuse a long-standing wrong because of apathy. Some may play a part in the political system, and because of a perceived injustice or wrong, they may decide to stop participating. In many cases people feel like they don’t have a voice in a matter, even though there ideas and actions were right and just. Many give up a cause they don’t see a change.

But many movements and political actions begin with the efforts of one person. Throughout history, we have seen how one person, working toward an end goal, can mobilize like-minded people to change injustices or situations that have the capacity to inflict suffering and pain.

Yeonmi Park is a North Korean human rights activist who witnessed first-hand how the brutal dictatorship of her former homeland affected her compatriots. She was raised by her mother and father in an affluent home. Both of her parents had jobs working for the country’s government, her mother as a nurse in the Korean army, and her father as a high-ranking member of the Workers’ Party. She remembers her very early childhood as a happy one, living with her parents and sister.

Her happiness came to an end when her father was accused of smuggling and sent to prison. He endured several years of hard labor there. Park insists that her father was only trying to make extra money because her family was starving. Nevertheless, his crimes earned him years of hard labor. He was released years later when he became extremely ill. It was at that time that her father insisted that the entire family needed to escape North Korea. Although the family carried out his wishes, he was too sick to make the journey himself, and later died in North Korea.

Park and her family made a harrowing journey, first crossing North Korea into China, enduring during harsh brutality at the hands of Chinese smugglers. Yeonmi Park was forced to watch her mother viciously assaulted, and raped in front of her. Park and her mother continued their journey, until they escaped to China and it crossed over into Mongolia. There, they made contact with South Korean diplomats, who helped him cross over into South Korea.

Park now speaks about her and her family’s ordeal, and about the North Korean government and its oppression towards people. She believes that the ways of the North Korean government are wrong, and that the oppression the North Korean people endures needs to end. Since her escape into South Korea, she has spoken to groups around the world, and is currently writing a book about her escape.

In many cases, it just takes the efforts of one person to change a nation. Park’s story of perseverance and endurance is an example to be followed for all people wishing to evoke change in seemingly unchangeable circumstances.

Levenson Philanthropic Endeavors Helps Communities

Bruce Levenson, the recent owner of the Atlanta Hawks, sold the NBA team to a group of buyers led by Anthony Ressler. The purchase was finalized somewhere in the neighborhood of $840 million. The bank managing the sale of the team over-estimated the sale price to be around $1 billion, which may have chased other potential buyers away. There could have been more interested participants in the buying of the Hawks if the selling price had not been set so high possibly scaring other buyers with less cash to not participate in the bidding.

Levenson is now settling into his new life able to spend more time with his wife and family including grandchildren. Although Bruce is extremely busy on any given day, he and his wife Karen, have many philanthropic endeavors they work on. Take a Slyce out of Amazon

Slyce Inc is a Visual Search and image recognition software company was which was founded by Cameron Chell and Erika Racicot in 2012. The visual Search and recognition software centers around the user being able to take a picture of an item on their Smartphone that they want to purchase. The software will identify the item in the picture and then bring them to a partnered website where they can purchase it. It is an incredible piece of software, which is garnering a lot of attention; Slyce has so far raised around $10.75 million in funding.

Slyce is in direct competition with Amazon Flow, a similar service that will be available exclusively on Amazons website, while Slyce aims to be used by every other retailer on the planet. Slyce however does have some competitive advantages over the Amazon App, first and foremost it will have a larger retailer platform to find the products you want. Secondly and perhaps more importantly, Amazon Flow more often that not requires that the product be in its original packaging to find it correctly. Slyce does not have this limitation; according to Chief Digital Officer Mark Elfenbein the App will be able to identify items that are outside of their original packaging wherever they are.

Amazon is claiming that most shoppers will use the Flow App when in a physical store location in order to find a potentially better price online, so most pictures will be taken while in the packaging. However Slyce wants to take this one step further and allow consumers to take a picture wherever they are, for instance seeing a handbag you like and having the ability to take a picture of it to find where it is for sale.

Slyce is also attempting to enter the gift registry market, by allowing users to take pictures of items to add to gift registries. Slyce’s technology will rely heavily on machine recognition, however in instances where the item cannot be matched they will have an employee apply the finishing touches.

The organization has already received significant backing financially but plans to take this in further in the next few months. Slyce has been acquiring companies at a rapid pace in order to gain competitive advantage, which in this day and age is a smart investment. Technological developments move at a blistering pace and it is important for companies to have that edge.
